Drinking from Mimir's Well: The sources for Old Norse Religion, Belief and Blot
Joshua Rood is a PHD Candidate at the University of Iceland, specializing in Old Nordic religions, the history of religion, and of the modern religious uses of Old Nordic Religion such as Asatru and neo-Heathenism. He is also actively involved in the Asatru movement in Iceland, the United States, and Scandinavia. He is also the vocalist of the blackened death metal band, Nexion.
In his lecture, Josh will be mapping out the sources of Norse Mythology and Viking Age religion, explaining the differences between those sources, and helping to explain how it is that we know what we know about the old ways. He will also take us on an exploration of some of the key myths and characters from those sources, and shed some light on some concepts that have been popularized today, such as "what exactly is blot".

Ascending the steps of Hlidskjalf: Odin and Early Scandinavian Rulership

Odin is commonly portrayed as the Sovereign ruler of gods and men. This portrayal has shaped the modern perception as seen in popular entertainment. But it is natural to ask how Odin developed into the ruling, "Allfather" that we are presented with.
In his talk, Josh Rood will shed light on this process, showing when, where and how Odin first began to be associated with rulership, what roles his cult may have played for those who worshiped him, and offering us a glimpse of Odin prior to him becoming "Allfather".
